If your Whatsapp messages are delaying or not coming until
you manually launch it, here’s help. The major reason why Whatsapp is not
receiving messages could be either;
- Whatsapp not running in the background as it should be
- Whatsapp can’t connect to the servers in the background
- Notifications are disabled
You can’t be so sure which one of the above is happening. The best thing is to follow these steps to try and trouble-shoot.
1. Don’t Restrict Background Data
If you restrict the background data for a particular app, it
can’t connect to its servers until you open it. To fix this, go to Settings
> All > Data usage. Tap on Whatsapp and ensure the restriction is not
checked.
2. Enable Notifications
There are 3 things you need to do in order to enable
Whatsapp notifications:
a) Head over to Settings > Apps > Whatsapp. Check ‘Show
notifications’
b) Go to Whatsapp > Settings > Notifications. Check ‘Conversation
tones’. You can also use customized ring tones if you like
c) Do not mute Whatsapp notifications
3. Disable Apps You Don’t Use
All Smartphones usually limit the number of background
processes that are going on at any particular time. The reason for this is
basically to save battery power especially when so many apps are enabled. Note that
some apps run in the background or keep on starting themselves regardless of
whether you are using them.
Some apps do important tasks for the android system. But it doesn’t
make sense for games and useless browsers to ruin your vital apps. Be sure you
know what an app is used for before disabling it. Uninstall apps you’ll never
use and disable those you rarely use.
To disable an app, go to Settings > All > Apps >
All. Tap on the one you want to tame and select ‘Disable’ or ‘Force stop’.
4. Close Each App When Done
Once you are done using an app, look for the ‘exit’ option. Sometimes,
the button could also be labeled as ‘quit’ or ‘close’. If you can’t find such
an option, try tapping on the back button numerous times until you return to
main menu.
When using some features like gallery, settings and file
manager, you may be tempted to hit the home button when you are done. These are
also apps, and they are left running if you do this.
The key is, if you quit using an app without closing it, it
is minimized and not closed. This may impact the performance of other apps. On a
desktop computer, you can see all running apps on the taskbar. It’s not the
same case on a smartphone.
At this juncture, you
can recheck whether the problem is gone. This is particularly so if you found
something that was amiss. Otherwise, you can continue with the other steps.
5. Consider Disabling
Battery Saver Apps
Android battery saving apps minimize CPU usage or disable some
processes or apps. This could be important to you if power drainage is a big
issue for you. But it may hamper your phone usage experience.
If you think a power saver app is hindering the performance
of your vital apps, you can temporarily disable it and see whether there is any
improvement. If the issue was with the power saver, you can weigh your options
and decide what to do.
6. Uninstall or Disable Security Apps
Security and anti-virus apps are known to prevent other
applications from starting in the background. If you are using such an app,
consider disabling to see whether it’s causing any problems for Whatsapp.
7. Log Out from Whatsapp Web
If you had logged in to Whatsapp web, you might not be able
to receive notifications on your android phone. To log out from desktop, open Whatsapp
> Options > Whatsapp Web. Select Log out.
8. Check that 3G or 4G is available
We all love the higher speeds of 3G and 4G. Unfortunately,
these services are not available in all locations. If you go to a new place,
make sure the network you have chosen is accessible. If not, select the one
that is available.
9. Check Your Developer Options
If you had enabled your phones developer options in the
settings, this could cause some issues with the running. You can disable the
feature, or set the ‘Background process limit’ to standard or maximum.
If you still can’t receive Whatsapp messages, try restarting
your phone or clearing the apps cache. With these tips, I hope you’ll be able
to receive your Whatsapp messages without any delay.
